(ECNS) -- Fangchenggang City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Thursday announced a series of suspension measures as Super Typhoon Ragasa approaches.
With severe wind and rain forecast, the city ordered all schools, tourist attractions, and leisure venues to close on the day, including outdoor sightseeing activities, according to a notice released by the local flood control and drought relief headquarters.
All operations in high-risk areas such as outdoor construction and high-altitude places were halted except for those involved in rescue, disaster relief, and urban operation support, including water supply, power supply, gas, and communications.
From 2 a.m. to 2 p.m., public transportation and long-distance passenger transport services would adjust their operations in phases based on real-time weather conditions. Food delivery and courier services would be suspended, and all non-essential vehicular traffic is advised to minimize travel, with exemptions for emergency, rescue, medical, and critical urban service vehicles.
The notice further stated that all non-essential venues — including those for culture, leisure, and entertainment — will remain closed during this period. Essential establishments such as farmers' markets, supermarkets, and gas stations, however, should stagger their operating hours to avoid severe wind and rain.
Ragasa, the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year as forecasted by meteorologists, is moving westward at speeds of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour and its intensity is gradually weakening, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
From 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Thursday, parts of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Jiangsu are likely to see heavy rainstorms, with some areas in Guangdong, Guangxi and Jiangsu to experience precipitation of up to 220 millimeters, the NMC said.
