(ECNS) -- Authorities in Dalian, North China's Liaoning Province, have reported a criminal case involving the deaths of two Japanese nationals, with the suspect already in custody.

According to an official statement released by the Dalian Public Security Bureau on Wednesday, the incident occurred on May 23 in the Daliujia area of Pulandian District. The suspect, a 42-year-old Chinese national surnamed Yuan who had been living in Japan, was apprehended on May 24.

Following an in-depth investigation, police have largely clarified the circumstances of the case. The two victims, Japanese men temporarily visiting China, were former business partners of the suspect during his time in Japan. A business-related dispute is believed to have triggered the fatal conflict.

Yuan has been placed under criminal detention in accordance with Chinese law. The case remains under further investigation and will be handed over to the procuratorate for prosecution.

Local authorities have informed the victims' families, who traveled to Dalian, of the case details. With official assistance, they completed postmortem arrangements, including cremation. The families returned to Japan on June 1.
