(ECNS) -- Giant pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi, who have spent 11 years in Malaysia, arrived at the Ya'an base of the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) on Sunday, accompanied by experts from the two countries.
Both Fu Wa and Feng Yi were born at the CCRCGP on Aug. 23, 2006. They were sent to the Zoo Negara in Malaysia on May 21, 2014, under China's panda loan programme, a symbol of goodwill marking 40 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
As the first pair of giant pandas residing in Malaysia, the pair quickly became household animal stars in Malaysia with their lively and adorable image. According to the transition agreement signed between China and Malaysia in 2024, the cooperation period, which was scheduled to expire on May 20, 2024, was extended to May 20, 2025.
During their stay in Malaysia, the two giant pandas produced three cubs: Nuan Nuan, Yi Yi, and Sheng Yi. All of them returned to China in August 2023 and are in good health.
In order to ensure the safe and smooth return of the giant pandas, a Chinese expert had been sent to Malaysia in advance to carry out feeding management, behavioral training, daily physical examination and health assessment with Malaysian experts.
The two giant pandas will meet the public in due course, according to the panda base. The public can pay attention to the living conditions of the two giant pandas through the official platforms of CCRCGP, it stated.
China and Malaysia will launch a new round of research cooperation on giant panda protection this year.
