(ECNS) -- AI hair-washing machines are emerging in major Chinese cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen, drawing mixed reactions from consumers. While some praise the convenience, calling it a "travel lifesaver," others dismiss it as little more than an automated water sprayer.

Industry sources indicate these devices are mainly produced by small businesses. One manufacturer has already opened nearly 20 dedicated stores. Priced at around 30,000 yuan (approximately \$4,145), these machines currently offer limited functions. Market observers suggest the real growth potential lies in expanding into comprehensive hair and scalp care solutions.

Currently, the AI hair-washing experience follows a streamlined routine. Barbershops first analyze customers' scalp conditions before guiding them to massage chairs. Customers are provided with noise-canceling earplugs and a facial silicone mask to ensure no water leakage. The automated hair-cleaning process lasts between 10 to 20 minutes.

Different manufacturers employ distinct technologies. Some use high-pressure water jets for thorough cleansing, while others feature "bionic micro-fingers" that mimic human touch for gentle scalp massages.

Investigations show that the cost of an AI hair wash ranges between 9.9 and 19.9 yuan per service.

"976AI Hair Wash," with nearly 20 outlets, offers various services at different price points. For example, its mini program provides first-time users with an all-inclusive "AI Health Wash" for just 19.9 yuan, combining smart hair cleansing, full-body massage, essential oil treatment, and scalp diagnostics. The brand has expanded into premium add-ons such as hair revitalization and color restoration treatments, priced between 99 and 499 yuan.

However, industry insiders suggest that AI hair washing is more of a publicity stunt. "The real business lies in hair and scalp care. A simple hair-washing service relying solely on machines can't sustain the market," said Huang, an employee at a tech company in Guangzhou.

Experts also remain skeptical about current AI hair-washing machines, believing these devices are still in their conceptual infancy, with marketing appeal outweighing practical benefits.

Ge Zhizhuan, an associate researcher at the Guangzhou Academy of Social Sciences, said the rapid advancement of AI technology has enabled businesses to reinvent traditional services, generating buzz and stimulating market activity.
