(ECNS) -- It is China’s consistent position to oppose hegemonic, domineering and bullying practices in international relations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Guo made the remarks in response to inquiries about China's stance on the change that the Trump administration has started referring to the Gulf of America rather than the Gulf of Mexico.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January, renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

"The Gulf will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy, and in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it officially be renamed the Gulf of America,” his order said.

Trump's move has triggered a wave of online backlash, geopolitical criticism and debate over its implications.

Critics argue that the renaming does little to address pressing domestic and international concerns. Others see it as part of a broader effort by Trump to emphasize nationalism and "American greatness," U.S. media has reported.
