As of November last year, more than 40,000 people involved in telecom fraud in northern Myanmar were repatriated and subsequently approved for arrest, China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said on Thursday.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate has actively carried out a special campaign to crack down on telecom fraud linked to northern Myanmar, Du Xueyi, an official from SPP said during an interview on Thursday.

He revealed that the SPP has coordinated and overseen related cases across 28 provinces in China. As of November 2024, local procuratorial organs had approved the arrest of over 40,000 repatriated individuals linked to telecom fraud, and prosecuted over 29,000 people. They also initiated public prosecution against the Ming family in north Myanmar as part of the broader crackdown.

In December, the Wenzhou People's Procuratorate in East China's Zhejiang Province filed charges against 39 members of the Ming family's "mafia" and associated criminal groups, who had long been operating in northern Myanmar's Kokang Self-Administered Zone. They used armed forces and carried out telecom network fraud and other crimes targeting Chinese citizens.

From January to November 2024, procuratorial organs across China prosecuted over 67,000 people for crimes related to telecom and online fraud, marking a 58.5 percent increase from the previous year, said Du.

In 2024, the National Immigration Administration collaborated with multiple government agencies to investigate and address a total of more than 35,000 cases of crimes that disrupt the management of national border areas, the administration said on Thursday. More than 79,000 criminal suspects were arrested, 906 criminal gangs were dismantled, mitigating security threats and reinforcing national border stability and immigration control.
