An open data report from Fudan University said the public's accessibility to government data has surged between 2017 and March 2019, as reported by China Daily Tuesday.

According to the 2019 China Open Data Index compiled by the Shanghai-based Fudan University, as of March, 82 local governments on the mainland have built online platforms providing public access to government data, compared to 18 in 2017.

Among all provincial-level regions, Shanghai, the first to set up an open data platform, tops the ranking of data openness, followed by Zhejiang and Guizhou provinces.

Over the same period, the number of data sets available for download saw a drastic increase from less than 8,400 in 2017 to nearly 63,000, covering areas including judicial verdicts, business registrations and food and drug examinations.

The report also called for regular updates to such data and more timely responses to users' comments.
