Survey shows average Australian overweight

The average Australian is overweight despite the majority of the nation considering themselves to be in good health.

Data released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) 2017-18 National Health Survey (NHS) on Wednesday revealed that the average Australian is overweight or obese and does not eat enough vegetables.

According to the ABS, the typical Australian exercises for 42 minutes per day and has never smoked.

Despite the results, 56 percent of respondents thought they were in excellent or very good health, while only 15 percent said they were in fair or poor health.

"On average, we were doing 42 minutes of exercise every day, which mostly consisted of walking for transport or walking for exercise (24.6 minutes), however we didn't participate in sufficient strength and toning activities," Louise Gates, ABS Director of Health Statistics, said in a media release on Wednesday.

"In addition, 44 percent of us spent most of our work day sitting."

"More than half of us were eating the recommended daily intake of fruit but not enough vegetables, with only 7.5 percent of adults eating the recommended daily serves of vegetables."

Almost half of Australians had at least one chronic health condition.

The Australian Institution of Health and Welfare (AIHW) on Tuesday revealed that Australia ranked the ninth out of 23 countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for the proportion of the population who were either overweight or obese at 63 percent.
