Portuguese dance company Quorum Ballet returns to Shanghai with its "Correr O Fado" production in May. It was staged in 2012 in Shanghai.
Fado is Portuguese for fate or destiny, and is seen by some people to represent the soul and spirit of Portuguese culture. The style of urban folk music was developed in the early 19th century.
"Correr O Fado" is a breakthrough production bringing fado and contemporary dance together, says the company.
Founded by choreographer and dancer Daniel Cardoso, who is also artistic director, Quorum Ballet boasts an extensive contemporary repertoire.
Cardoso started dancing at the age of 9 with the Escola de Dança do Conservatório Nacional in Lisbon, later winning a scholarship with the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and the Joffrey Ballet School, both in New York. He went on to dance with Martha Graham Dance Company.
Quorum Ballet dancers come from Ballet Gulbenkian, the National Dance Company of Lisbon, the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York, and the Peter Schaufuss Ballet in Denmark.
The performance is part of the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival.
