The Marseille Opera Orchestra is visiting China for the first time, led by music director Lawrence Foster. They will present arias from Bizet's "Carmen" and "Suite de l'Arlésienne," Gounod's "Faust," Rossini's "The Barbiere of Seville," Faure's "Suite de Pelléas et Mélisande" and Saint-Saëns' "Sansom et Dalila: Bacchanale."
The orchestra, founded in 1965, now has 88 musicians. Foster joined the orchestra as music director in 2012 after completing a 10-year tenure as artistic director and chief conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra.
American mezzo-soprano Jennifer Holloway will be performing with the orchestra. She studied at the University of Georgia and Manhattan School of Music and took part in the young artist programs at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, the Santa Fe Opera and Pittsburg Opera.
In the 2012-2013 season, Holloway played Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni" with Pittsburgh Opera, Tebaldo in "Don Carlos" with Metropolitan Opera, and Magnolia in "Show Boat" with Washington National Opera.
