Luoyang, the paradise of peony

Luoyang, a city with a long history and profound culture of Henan Province, is also renowned as a city of peony. Luoyang National Peony Garden is the home to more than 1000 varieties of peony and main gene of peony in the world, and the Luoyang International Peony Festival has become a culture symbol of the city. Each year, countless visitors travel to Luoyang to enjoy the scene of full blossom of peony.

Generally speaking, a peony is known to be fragrant and features large blossoms, making it an excellent choice for cut flowers to decorate and enhance any event. In China, peony which is called the King of flowers for its gorgeous charm and unbelievably beauty has been a symbol of grace and social status. Ancient Chinese poets like to use peony as a symbol of beautiful and elegant ladies.

Peonies are known to best thrives in sunny locations and in well-drained soils and is known to tolerate a wide range of soil types. However, peony is best known to grow in soil with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 and one that is rich and deep in organic matter.

Luoyang has a long history of planting peony. Peony growing began to prevail in the region of the Sui Dynasty over one thousand years ago. Lasting to the Tang Dynasty, many famous peony gardens were constructed and peony was planted on a massive scale. Luoyang became the country's peony cultivation and trade center in the Song Dynasty, and Luoyang peony became internationally famous.

Luoyang peony is well-known for its big flowers and many varieties. Each year, from late spring to mid-March when the peonies are in full blossom, thousands of visitors swarm to the city to enjoy the stunningly beautiful flowers. The International Peony Festival held here annually adds even more fame to Luoyang's peony, and the National Peony Garden is one of the main venues for Luoyang Peony Festival.
