Perenially popular classic Shanghai hotel in the French Concession
Opened in 1988, the Hilton Shanghai has a slight marble-and-shoulderpads feel, but regular refurbishments have kept it from becoming too dated. It's still a popular choice for sporting luminaries - Lewis Hamilton commandeers the Presidential Suite during the annual Shanghai Formula 1, and many of the stars of the ATP Masters tournament have also stayed here.
Its location on the French Concession/Jingan border makes for fabulous views over the traditional low-rise lane houses, uninterrupted by towering skyscrapers, and it's within easy walking distance of the metro and tourist hotspots like Jingan Temple and Nanjing Xi Lu. Of the eight dining options, the 24-hour Atrium Cafe with its glass domed ceiling is a bright, sunny spot for breakfast, while you can select your fish or crab from the tanks to be cooked Ningbonese-style at marine-themed eatery People On the Water.
Leisure facilities include a gym, indoor pool, tennis and squash courts (private coaching sessions can be arranged with the in-house instructor), a small sun deck with loungers (for working on that tan), and an 8-room spa. There's even a hair salon and an exclusive-feeling cigar lounge.
Guestrooms, particularly the ensuite bathrooms, are a bit on the smallish side given the price, but are redeemed by luxury touches like Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries.
Standard rooms, including high-speed broadband access, from 894RMB.
