(ECNS) — The Beihai Coast Guard Bureau in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region seized goods worth about 5 million yuan (about $700,000), including more than 5,000 cartons of cigarettes and about 15 metric tons of frozen beef products, in four suspected smuggling cases over five days, the bureau said Tuesday.
The bureau also seized two high-powered speedboats and one vehicle and detained three suspects.
On Sept. 26 and 27, the bureau received public reports of suspected smuggling activities in local waters. It launched joint operations with the Tieshangang District Public Security Bureau in Beihai, seizing more than 5,000 cartons of cigarettes and a vehicle in waters off Tieshangang District and Hepu County.
At about 10 p.m. Sept. 28, coast guard officers on patrol spotted a high-powered speedboat carrying a large quantity of goods packed in woven bags. A boarding inspection led to the detention of one suspect and the seizure of about seven metric tons of salted beef tripe. Investigators said that the frozen goods lacked proof of legal origin and inspection and quarantine certificates and are suspected of being smuggled.
At about 9 p.m. Sept. 30, officers patrolling waters near Tieshangang spotted another high-powered speedboat traveling at high speed. The bureau coordinated with other local law enforcement agencies to intercept the vessel, detaining two suspects and seizing about eight metric tons of frozen beef offal. The goods also lacked proof of legal origin and inspection and quarantine certificates.
All four cases remain under further investigation.
