(ECNS)-- A cross-border parcel hub in the eastern Chinese trading city of Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, handled more than $450 million worth of exports in the first eight months of the year, more than double the total for all of last year, according to figures released Thursday by the center.

The Yiwu Cross-Border Express Supervision Center said it now handles nearly 10,000 packages a day bound for more than 30 countries and regions.

As shipment volumes have grown, processing has also become faster. The time needed to collect goods from shippers has been reduced to about one day from two or three days, while truck waiting times have been nearly halved.

Previously, goods shipped under different trade categories had to clear customs separately. Under a new system combining simplified manifests with customs declarations and allowing inspections before loading, e-commerce, general trade and market-procurement goods can now be loaded into the same container. Companies no longer need to wait until they have enough goods of the same category to fill a container, saving about 500 yuan ($70) per container.

The center has also expanded the use of smart supervision, upgrading automated checkpoints, electronic customs locks and round-the-clock handling areas. Packages are automatically screened as they pass through the facility, reducing manual procedures and speeding up inspections.

Once goods are declared and inspected in Yiwu, shipments are sealed with electronic smart locks, allowing data to be tracked throughout the entire journey. Companies can also complete transfers automatically at ports including Ningbo and Shanghai, reducing delays caused by manual inspections and further improving the efficiency of cross-border shipments.
