(ECNS) -- Memorial stone pillars commemorating the 25 martyrs from the Chung Shan Warship have been vandalized by graffiti, according to the Wuhan-based Changjiang Daily.
The pillars are situated on top of a mountain in a tourist resort in Jiangxia District of Wuhan.
Reporters on Monday found more than 200 pieces of graffiti on the pillars. Phrases and names like "xx was here" and "xx, I love you forever" are written or carved all over the pillars. A nearly-300-word love letter in black ink was also found, dated January 18, 2013.
Deng, who works for the resort, said the vandalism is common and has existed since the resort opened to the public. He blamed limited security personnel for the problem.
He also promised to clean the graffiti off as soon as possible.
The Chung Shan Warship, named in honor of Sun Yat-sen, China's democratic revolutionary leader, was bombed and sunk in the Yangtze River by Japanese invaders in the battle of Wuhan in 1938.
