(ECNS) — A Japanese civil organization called the "Japan Action Resolution of the Comfort Women Issue" has requested the United Nations to designate Aug. 14 as "Comfort Women Day," according to Korea Broadcasting System World Radio.

The organization has launched an online campaign, saying that Aug. 14 was the day the late Korean woman Kim Hak-Soon first revealed the historical facts of comfort women.

Kim held a press conference on Aug. 14, 1991 and spoke of how women in other Asian countries were forced into sexual slavery by Japanese troops during World War II.

Over 50 civil organizations in Japan have shown support for the request.
