Mianyang (CNS) – With an infusion of 6.7 billion yuan and the goal to irrigate 1.33 million hectares, three major water projects got underway on November 23: the second phase of the Sichuan Wuyin irrigation project, the Anqiu Guandaoqiao dam and the Hejiang Suokou dam. Almost 2 million people will be supplied with clean water once the projects are completed.

The three projects are key to Sichuan boosting its agricultural sector and relieving the long-running drought in the region.

About 1.6 million residents in the counties of Mianyang, Suining, Guangyuan and Nanchong will benefit from the second phase of the Wuyin irrigation project which is set to irrigate over 1 million hectares. Anqiu Guandaoqiao dam is a medium-size reservoir which will irrigate an area of 158 thousands hectares and bring water to 270 thousand residents. Hejiang Suokou dam, also a medium-size reservoir, is being built to irrigate 120 thousand hectares and bring water to 90,000 residents.

Sichuan invested 11.8 billion yuan in water projects between January and November this year, with the intention of supplying water to 2.4 million residents and manage soil erosion threatening 1,854 square meters.
