Guangzhou (CNS) -- Female office workers in Guangzhou feel forced to give up their careers and stay at home to care for their babies since the costs of nursing and housekeeping have shot up this year.

The fees for domestic help simply put more burdens on new parents, in addition to mortgage payments and the costs of daily necessities like baby formula.

Li, a local worker couldn't do other than quit her job last summer to take care of her baby by herself, thereby cutting the family's expenditures by half.

The housekeeping market lacks overall management that could strategize to cope with the shortage of well-qualified housekeepers and babysitters, and the absence of enforceable labor contracts.

An association of the municipal housekeeping companies set up a training school to guide the industry towards professional modes of operation by offering courses and issuing certificates. Further steps are still needed to expand the program to the whole city and encourage more participants.
