Beijing (CNS) -- The third phase of an urban planning proposal for the east part of the technology park in Fengtai District has been approved,as part of a strategy to build a new Southern Beijing Center.

Large overpasses and ten-lane expressways are common in Beijing, but even professional drivers get headaches from the regular traffic jams in the capital. Walking or riding a bike can also be a challenge. To tackle the issue, the design concept of the third phase proposes a low-speed traffic design.

For the sake of passengers and cyclists, planners have attempted to build a pilot traffic system for low-speed passengers and vehicles which would forbid structures that block thoroughfares and also large signs on the tops of buildings.

The system aims to facilitate convenient junctions between walking paths and bicycle lanes, as well as between bus stations and subways. The project will include sidewalks, cycling paths, platform bridges, underpasses, signal lights for low-speed traffic, and bicycle parking zones and rental services.

To encourage environmentally-friendly traffic, the technology park will set up 30 bicycle rental spots to cover 90% of the park's area, each with 100 bicycles. Pedestrians will only need to walk 300 meters at most to reach the nearest one.

To maximize the use of space, all underground areas are to be connected, with the same number of floors all at the same height.

Parking zones would contain no less than 65 cars per 10,000 square meters. One-tenth of all parking spots are to be equipped with electrical charging pillars for new energy-saving cars.

The designers have also focused on green space. Large areas of public lawn will be concentrated in the center of the park, and greenery will take up 7.7 hectares, or 30% of the entire park area.

All building heights will be restricted to 45-80 meters, with some higher exceptions restricted to under 120 meters.
