Shijiazhuang (CNS) -- The Shijiazhuang Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics confirmed Sunday the 28,000 to 35,000 year age of the Water Curtain Cave, located in the Mimishui Scenic Area in Pingshan County, Hebei Province.

The cave was named by Xie Fei, archaeological expert of the Old Stone Age and deputy director of the Hebei Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics.

In August 2009, after precise examination, he ascertained that the cave is a crucial relic site of the late Paleolithic Age.

The Water Curtain Cave was estimated to be of the same age as the Xiaonanhai Relics in Anyang, Henan Province, and the Upper Cave in Beijing.

In June 2010, the provincial and city administrations discovered 200,000 pieces of stoneware and fossils in the cave. The large number of relics is rare for Chinese archaeological discoveries.

Many animal bones and complete teeth structures were found in the eastern entrance of the Water Curtain Cave in June this year.

"The age confirmation of the Water Curtain Cave is of great significance to the history of Shijiazhuang. It was traced to almost 20,000 to 30,000 years ago," noted Liu Zhengjun, director of the Shijiazhuang City Bureau of Cultural Relics.

"It filled in the historical blank of Hebei cave relics east of Taihang Mountain, as well as the Shijiazhuang cultural site from the Paleolithic Age. A new example was provided for north-south exchanges of the Old Stone culture," added Liu.
