A total of 2.63 million exhibits have thus far been submitted by 25,000 enterprises registered for the 129th session of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, according to the China Foreign Trade Centre (Group), the organizer of the event.

The fair has prepared 60,000 exhibition booths for the 25,000 domestic and international exhibitors, and is expected to attract purchasers from more than 220 countries and regions, said Chu Shijia, the official in charge of the fair, on Friday.

The 129th Canton Fair will be held online between April 15 and April 24 this year. It is the third time the fair will be held online following two virtual events successfully held in June and October last year.

During the pandemic, the online fair will not only help domestic foreign trade enterprises receive more orders and expand their market opportunities, but it will also inject momentum into global economic recovery by contributing to the stability of the global industrial and supply chains, said Chu.

A total of 50 exhibition areas will be set up, including a special area focusing on rural vitalization. The special area will help businesses in poverty-stricken regions explore overseas markets, and it is continuing to accept applications from more companies free of charge.

Since the 122nd session of the Canton Fair was held in 2017, the fair has provided more than 8,000 free booths for 6,000 enterprises in poverty-stricken areas, with 86.69 million yuan (about 13.21 million U.S. dollars) in booth fees exempted or reduced, according to Chu. That has led to a turnover of 1.7 billion U.S. dollars for the enterprises' exports.

Founded in 1957, the Canton Fair is seen as an important barometer of China's foreign trade. The 128th session attracted approximately 26,000 domestic and overseas enterprises showcasing more than 2.47 million products.
