JD.com said it will form an independent logistics company to synergize its online business with other online and offline partners.
JD Logistics Business Group will be an affiliate under JD.com and will leverage the company's technology and logistics expertise to provide smart supply chain and logistics services.
JD.com wants the logistics subsidiary to serve not only third-party vendors on its platform, but also other independent businesses.
The unit seems to pose a direct competition with Alibaba's logistics affiliate Cainiao, which doesn't have any physical presence but work with other logistics companies to deliver consumers' online purchases on Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall platforms.
