Coolpad will develop phones with technologies not seen elsewhere in China, such as dual-screen, multi-camera and virtual reality shooting, said its new chief executive yesterday in Shanghai.

Hong Kong-listed Coolpad has set up a joint venture with Russia-based Yota and hopes to offer dual-screen phones in China by next year. The virtual reality production and multi-camera models are also in the process of research, said Liu Jiangfeng, Coolpad's CEO.

"We aim to lead in the markets as early as next year," said Liu, a former executive of Huawei, the current market leader.

The dual-screen phone features an additional e-ink screen, currently used in Kindle, which allows users to read novels and check emails and short messages on the energy-efficient screen. The system and user interface is redesigned for local consumers.

The camera and photography will be a highlight of the Coolpad models, such as the virtual reality camera.

The price will range from 1,000 to 2,000 yuan ($150 to $300) to target younger users, Liu added.

LeEco is Coolpad's biggest shareholder and the two brands are aiming to sell 50 to 60 million smartphones this year and about 100 million in 2017. LeEco is strong on Internet marketing and promotion while Coolpad will expand the sales channels nationwide, Liu said.

Coolpad launched Cool1 Dual with dual camera feature in 15 cities including Shanghai at the weekend. The pre-order sales of the model surpassed 10 million units.
