Spurious promotions, bogus discounts and poor after-sales service were the major complaints lodged by online consumers during this year's Singles Day shopping bonanza, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said yesterday.

The watchdog received 1,432 complaints from November 11 to 20, of which 183 were specifically about the November 11 event. The number was about the same as last year, it said.

Several people complained that vendors raised prices before the event in order to offer "discounts" on the day. But in many cases, the discount prices were higher than the original ones.

About 80 people said that after buying discounted clothes through the website of Shanghai Aishangbanggou Co they were told the items were out of stock and their orders were canceled, according to the commission.

The commission also received 715 complaints related to express delivery services last month, an increase of about 120 percent from last year, it said.

Delays, damage to packages and poor service were among the top complaints, according to the commission.

Several firms, in their haste to get packages delivered on time, paid scant attention to their care, the watchdog said.

Many also refused to compensate people whose goods were damaged in transit, it said.

Also yesterday, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce of China said that several batches of products advertised on tmall.com, yhd.com, Amazon and Suning's e-commerce site yigou as being from leading brands were actually fake.

Tmall, the country's largest online business-to-consumer site, was discovered to be selling counterfeit versions of New Balance sports shoes, Adidas bags and Zippo lighters, the administration said

Yhd.com, meanwhile, offered fake versions of New Balance shoes and Burberry scarves, Yigou offered counterfeit versions of Estee Lauder products and Amazon carried a fake batch of Kingston USB drives, it said.

Of the 207 batches of products tested from all suppliers, eight were confirmed to have been counterfeit, it said.
