The people behind the construction of a fourth natural gas pipeline connecting China and Central Asia say they expect to have it operational by the start of 2016.

Meng Fanchun, deputy manager of the firm building the pipeline on behalf of PetroChina, contends it will fundamentally transform the pattern of energy transportation in Central Asia.

"After the completion of Line D, upward of 85 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be transported from Central Asia to China every year, including 30 billion cubic meters through Line D. It's very important to guarantee consistent natural gas supplies and emission reductions in China."

Line D is currently under construction near the Tajik capital Duschanbe.

The thousand-kilometer-long project starts from Turkmenistan, passes through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrghyzstan and ends in Xinjiang.

The deal to construct the pipeline was inked a year ago.
