Samsung Electronics Co yesterday launched the latest generation of advanced technology, super-thin design and fingerprint recognition tablet computers, the first to be used in tablets globally, in the Chinese market.
'The tablet is a strategic product of Samsung's product family because it will be the most personal mobile device in future,' Jae-soon Park, Samsung Electronics China's president, said in a conference in Shanghai.
The main feature of Samsung's new Galaxy Tab S includes AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes) screens, used in the company's flagship phones, that come with vivid and high quality images. The tablet also uses fingerprint recognition technology for security and privacy protection — the world's first tablet to feature the technology. Apple may add fingerprint technology in new iPads in September, industry sources said
The Galaxy Tab S, which offers Wi-Fi and 4G versions for both 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch screen, costs from 2,888 yuan (US$466) to 4,488 yuan.
Samsung, which ranked No. 2 in the global tablet computer market, aims to challenge the dominance of Apple, observers said.
By the end of first quarter, Samsung was No. 2 in the domestic tablet market with an 11.1 percent, behind Apple's 57.1 percent, said Analasys International.
