Tencent's popular smart phone chatting tool WeChat and China Mobile Guangdong Co Ltd recently teamed up to offer a special 4G data traffic package for WeChat users.

WeChat users can pay for data packages through WeChat's payment service and send them to friends as a gift via WeChat dialogues.

China Mobile hopes to leverage WeChat's power to spread by word of mouth to quickly grow the user base of its 4G service. The data package comes in two sizes - 10 megabytes of data for 1 yuan each and a 50M package for 3 yuan.

China Mobile will offer the data package for mobile phone numbers registered with the telecom operator's Guangdong subsidiary and it will also be compatible with 3G or 2G networks in places not yet covered by 4G.

WeChat has already been offering China Unicom users in Guangdong Province special data traffic packages since the end of last year. China Unicom also provided tailor-made WeChat SIM cards and has gained about 1 million users since its launch last year.
