The Canadian unit of Huawei Technology Co expects to double its mobile phone sales annually in the next two years by meeting young consumer demands, a company executive adviser said on Tuesday.
"Mobile devices will be the fastest-growing sector in the company in the next a few years," said Mike Hortie, former president of Motorola Canada and now executive adviser to Huawei Canada.
"The business may double this year, and again in 2015."
Huawei is a Chinese multinational corporation based in Shenzhen.
He said the company will focus on young consumers and hopes to earn a 20 percent market share in the mobile phone sector in the next three or four years.
"The biggest challenge for Huawei is to move from a technology company to a consumer goods one," he said.
Hortie said he expects 5G technology, now being developed by Huawei, Ericsson, Alcatel, and other communi-cations companies, to be used in the market in the next year and a half, driving demand for new handsets.
The next generation technology is envisioned to be faster and more reliable than the current 4G standard.
Huawei Canada now holds about a 50 percent market share for network construction for Canadian carriers, Hortie said.
