China's passenger car market accelerated in 2013 by posting a double-digit growth in sales after slowing for two years, the China Passenger Car Association said yesterday.

The sales of sedans, sport-utility vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles and minivans jumped 17 percent to 17.2 million units after deliveries in December rose 16.2 percent from a year earlier to 1.81 million units — the highest level for the month.

These figures helped set two new monthly records in a row for passenger car sales.

Rao Da, secretary-general of the association, attributed the sales jump to panic buying amid growing market fears of extended vehicle purchase curbs across the country and also the high season for car buying before the Spring Festival that begins on January 31.

He forecast January to post record monthly sales as the trends above will very likely continue. "It can lead to a 20 percent year-on-year growth and an optimistic prospect for following months," Rao said.
