China to figure highly in travel data

2013-04-26 13:58 Shanghai Daily     Web Editor: qindexing comment

Young and well educated Chinese consumers with a rising passion for leisure trips will ensure that mainland white collar tourists will travel the most in Asia-Pacific this year, said travel deal publisher Travelzoo Inc yesterday.

The consumers are abandoning traditional group tours and prefer to travel leisurely taking in cultural experience, beach holidays, self-drive exploration and diving as well as gourmet trips, Jason Yap, chief executive for Asia Pacific region of Nasdaq-listed Travelzoo, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

"China has become the largest source of 'tourism dollars' in the region, in many countries like Thailand, Australia and New Zealand," Yap said.

Chinese mainland travelers take 6.9 leisure trips on average that include getaways and long-haul holidays, a significant increase from last year's average figure of 4.2. Figures show that they will spend 20 percent more than this year than in 2012, amounting to US$7,117 on average, only second to Australia's US$8,867, according to a Travelzoo survey done among its 3,000 subscribers in China, Australia and Japan between December and January this year.

Travelzoo's 1.1 million young and well-educated mainland subscribers earn over 10,000 yuan (US$1,587) monthly in average.
