BMW recalls SUVs on pump leak problem

German luxury carmaker BMW will recall over 2,100 sport-utility vehicles in China as part of a worldwide recall due to a brake vacuum pump leak, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on its website yesterday.

The recall affects BMW X5 vehicles equipped with the V8 engine from model years 2007-2010 and produced between May 9, 2006 and March 18, 2010, including 2,116 units imported into the Chinese mainland. The recall also involves 30,265 units of X5 in the United States.

The recall is being instituted because the vehicle's brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the vacuum hose that connects to the brake booster whose contamination could result in failure in the power-assist braking system which may lead to a vehicle crash. There are so far no reports of related accidents or injuries.

Owners affected by the recall in China, due to start on March 18, will get free replacement for the potentially faulty brake vacuum hose as well as the brake booster and master cylinder if needed.
