MIIT Minister Miao Wei said the central government would issue policies geared toward SME growth during the first half of next year.

After a turbulent year, China's small businesses are set to get a boost through tax breaks, among other policies, according to a senior government official.

Miao Wei, Minister of Industry and Information Technology, said the government would introduce a package of supportive policies for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the first half of next year.

SMEs now account for 99 percent of Chinese companies and 75 percent of urban jobs, according to a statement by the State Council this year.

At a national-level government meeting on December 26, Miao said the government would establish tax breaks and SME development centers.

According to Miao, government banks and financial institutions will enhance credit support for small businesses.

Meanwhile, SME development centers will be created to provide services in procurement, loan applications and energy savings.

In October, Premier Wen Jiabao announced that the central government would create more favorable policies toward SME growth.
