Students starting their new semester at Beijing Normal University are now encountering facial recognition security systems among dorms on the campus, reports The Beijing News.

Students have to go through an identity scan before being granted access to the buildings.

The system can be activated by a student's voice, student card, or the last four numbers of the card password.

Alarms will sound if a person doesn't fit a recognized facial or vocal prompt.

Beijing Normal University has become the latest to adopt facial recognition technology.

Traffic management authorities in several Chinese cities are now using facial recognition systems to publicly shame jaywalkers.

Alipay is now trialing facial recognition technology for its customers to use at a KFC restaurant in Hangzhou. "Smile to Pay" lets Alipay users pay for their food through a combination of facial scanning and inputting their mobile phone numbers.

Analysis by the State Council, China's cabinet, suggests AI technology may become a 1 trillion yuan industry in China by 2020.
