A group of 44 people accused of running a telephone fraud ring out of Thailand are going to be repatriated to the Chinese mainland, including 25 suspects from Taiwan.
All suspects will be sent back to the Chinese mainland after standing trial in Thailand, Thai authorities announced Sunday.
The group was busted as part of a joint operation involving Chinese and Thai police, said Nathathorn Prousoontorn, chief of Thailand's Immigration Bureau, at a news conference on July 23, 2017.
Authorities allege the group posed as officials to try to swindle victims, mostly from the Chinese mainland. The group is said to have operated out of locations in Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar.
If completed, it will be the first time for Thailand to deport suspects from Taiwan back to the Chinese mainland since 2013.
