Anywhere between 15,000 and 16,000 organ transplants are expected to be completed in China this year, reports the China News Service.

31,000 individuals have registered themselves as organ donors so far this year, according to China's leading transplant official.

Dr. Huang Jiefu, the director of the China Organ Donation and Transplant Committee, has made the revelation at the opening ceremony of China's Sixth Organ Transplant Games.

Created in 2004, the Transplant Games is an event for Chinese organ recipients. This year's Games are taking place at Peking University in Beijing.

The opening of the Games on June 11, 2017, also marks China's first Organ Donation Day.

One of the bigger challenges facing China's transplant system is the number of available hospitals to perform the operations, said Huang Jiefu.

At one point there were around 600 hospitals in China performing transplants.

However, stronger regulations have seen the number of transplant-capable hospitals cut down to 173.

Chinese authorities hope those numbers will increase to 190 by the end of this year, with expectations of 300 hospitals eventually authorized to conduct organ transplants, according to Dr. Huang.

The China Organ Donation Administrative Center says by the end of May, there have been 276,082 people registered to become volunteers for organ donations.

11,977 of those people have already undergone the procedures, with 32,984 organs being donated.
