Over 20 legislators yesterday proposed building new south-north trunk roads to alleviate the congestion on the South-North Elevated Road — listed as one of the busiest roads in China.

The new infrastructure can be built on both sides of the South-North Elevated Road, especially the busiest section within Jing'an District, according to the proposal. The lawmakers suggested the city government to connect and expand nearby south-north roads parallel to the elevated artery.

The current elevated road should also be expanded northward to connect traffic in Jing'an and Baoshan districts.

The South-North Elevated Road is congested annually for about 250 days on average to become the busiest road in Shanghai. It was listed the 9th most congested road nationwide. The peak hours on the elevated road have also been increasing, according to surveys made by the legislators.

The bus lines beneath the elevated road can be moved to the proposed south-north roads to relieve the congestion on the busy Gonghexin Road which is beneath the elevated road.

The bus-only lanes like the one under the Yan'an Elevated Road can also be trialed on these new south-north roads, they proposed.

The city government has planned a North-South Passage project in Jing'an District on a trial basis to broaden the lanes.
