Metro Lines 1, 2 and 8 will have operating hours extended at night by 30 minutes on Fridays, Saturdays and the day before national holidays, starting Friday, to meet growing demand, the Metro operator said yesterday.

Three trains will be added in both directions on the three lines after the current last trains in response to a survey of commuters.

A resident surnamed Shen, who lives near Gongfu Xincun Station on Line 1, said yesterday the extension was good news for her purse.

"I won't have to call a taxi to go home if I'm hanging out with my friends at weekends," Shen said. "I'd like more lines to have the extended operating hours"

But Shen added that if it was too late she would still call a taxi for safety reasons.

Some netizens commented on the Metro operator's official Weibo account, saying they also hope to see extended operating hours of other lines such as 10 and 16.

The changes will not cover the section of Line 2 between Guanglan Road and Pudong International Airport. There will also be four trains added to departures from Hongqiao Railway Station on Line 2. The last train will leave that station at 11:30pm

Other operating hours changes due to holidays or special occasions will be released in advance, the operator added.

Meanwhile, construction on the Lujiazui Station on Line 14 began yesterday and the northern section of Huayuanshiqiao Road near the construction site has been partly blocked, reported local news website xinmin.cn.

Extra police are being deployed to divert traffic and drivers are advised to avoid this area during morning peak hours.

The six-lane road has been cut down to three lanes — two for vehicles traveling west and the other for those traveling east.

The Lujiazui Station construction will be carried out until December, 2019.
