A 25-year-old Russian teacher who worked for a English training center in Shanghai has been fired for 'mistreating' children in her class, her school said.

The K&H International School, where the Russian — known to parents as Carrie — worked in, said in a statement on Saturday that the teacher had "inappropriately stuck double-faced adhesive tape to the mouths of two kids during the interactive session of the class" last Tuesday.

The school apologized to all parents and said it was taking steps to annul the teacher's work permit.

A mother surnamed Zhu told Shanghai Daily that she had called the police on Wednesday after her mother-in-law saw the previous day that there was a piece of adhesive tape on the mouth of her son who was in the teacher's class.

Shanghai TV reported on Friday that the teacher had been working in the school for a year but had only received her working visa and professional approval last month.

It was reported the Changning branch of the school, where the Russian worked, did not have a business license.

The school was not available for comment yesterday.

Zhu said a few children on her son's class had told their parents that the teacher had done this to them probably because they were being "noisy."

"There are many ways to quiet children down," said Zhu, a former teacher herself, "but this is not acceptable."

She said parents of students in the teacher's class were seeking a refund on tuition fees, but have not yet received an answer from the school.
