Brazilian police say three of the 4 U.S. swimmers involved in the armed robbery scandal at the Games in Rio are cooperating with police.
Authorities say its unclear if any charges will be laid against the group at this point.
Gold medal winner Ryan Lochte and three others are being questioned for their role in vandalizing a local gas station.
The incident is part of the wider scandal involving the group's initial claims that they were robbed at gunpoint by thieves pretending to be local police last weekend.
The head of Rio's police department, Fernando Veloso, says they've now determined the armed robbery story was a fake.
"At this exact moment, what the police can say is there was no robbery the way the athletes reported. They were not victims of the criminal facts that they described. The police can say that now."
Veloso also says the intoxicated athletes vandalised the gas station bathroom and were questioned by guards before they paid for the damage and left.
This incident came on the same night the group claimed to have been robbed.
The publicity surrounding the case prompted a local judge to order all 4 of the athletes to remain in Brazil until the incident was sorted out.
However, Ryan Lochte had already returned to the United States, where he continued to peddle the story earlier this week until details began to unravel.
The incident has fueled outrage in Rio, which has been fighting to get past the stygma of being a crime-ridden city.
