A British man who crashed into a cyclist while driving without a license was ordered to pay her compensation of 750,000 yuan ($112,562) after he flouted a previous court order, Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Court said.

According to the court, the man, an engineer at a local auto company, took his Chinese wife's car out in mid-2013. When he was passing a crossroad in Jinqiao Town, he crashed into a cyclist, surnamed Zhang, causing her a brain injury.

The man paid part of Zhang's medical fees, but refused to pay for any further treatment, prompting Zhang to take him and his wife to court.

The court said the man was largely responsible for the accident and ordered the couple to pay Zhang 750,000 yuan. However, the couple didn't pay.

After Zhang applied for an enforcement order, the court found that the couple had moved out of their registered residence and disappeared.

An investigation showed that the man had quit his job after the ruling was announced and the couple's property had been transferred except for the car.

Data from the local exit & entry authority showed that the man had returned to Britain but his wife was still in China.

The court then imposed an exit restriction order on the couple and they recently paid the full amount to Zhang.
