Shanghai's flood control authority has been discharging water from the city's rivers and creeks to avoid the risk of flooding after levels on upstream Taihu Lake triggered an alert, officials said yesterday.
The average level of rivers in the city's outlying Jiading, Baoshan, Qingpu and Songjiang districts has been lowered by about 10 centimeters, while Suzhou Creek is now 20 centimeters lower after water was discharged into the Huangpu River to prevent flooding in downtown areas, Zhang Zhenyu, deputy director of the Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters, said.
The Taihu Lake region has been hit by heavy rain since last Friday, raising the level in the lake to 4.5 meters, 65 centimeters higher than the alert level, the Ministry of Water Resources said.
The city is paying particular attention to flood prevention at the Beiheng Passage road project and the Disney Resort, Zhang said.
