Three people were killed in an accident at a wax factory at about 3pm yesterday afternoon, Qingpu District government said.
Witnesses said there was a big explosion at the factory at No. 21 Block 6186 on Zhufeng Highway before it became engulfed by fire and smoke.
Local police and fire department soon arrived at the site and rescued people buried under the wreckage, local television reported.
The authorities didn't specify what caused the accident at the factory owned by Shanghai Joule Wax Company, but said it resulted in the collapse of nearly 200 square meters of steel panelling.
