A bus burst into flames yesterday afternoon in Hongkou District after smoke began to emanate from the engine, officials said. However, there were no injuries.
Firefighters raced to the scene on Siping Rd at 1:25pm and quickly extinguished the blaze on the No. 55 bus, police said.
Police said the bus was near the intersection of Siping Road and Quyang Road when the driver noticed smoke and a strange odor coming from the engine, prompting him to stop the bus and tell everyone to get off.
The driver checked the engine and found that it was on fire. He tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher but failed and called police.
Fire officials have established that the fire was caused by an engine malfunction.
The incident caused traffic congestion in nearby areas for about an hour.
