The annual income of people who work in finance is ranked the top in China with an average of over 114,000 yuan (US$17,500) last year, according to an official survey.

IT workers follow with 112,000-yuan wage per year and those working in the science and technology industry are reported to earn 89,400 yuan last year on average.

The survey by the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) also shows that covers more than 930,000 enterprises in 16 industries around the country.

It shows that the average wage of the employed persons by status of registration is 53,615 yuan per year (around 8,200 US dollars), up 7.3 percent year on year.

It is the first time for the average to break 50,000 yuan per year.

But miners did not have a good year in 2015 as their average wage have declined for the first time in years.

Statistics also show the average wage of the employed persons in urban non-private enterprises is 62,029 yuan per year. While in urban private enterprises, the average is 39,589 yuan.

Feng Nailin, an official of NBS, says two reasons bringing about the accelerated growth of average wage despite economic downturn. One is the wage policy; the other is the macro-economic stability.

Many netizens find the statistics inconsistent with their own wages and joke that they have become the "draggers" again.

"Average numbers can't tell the whole story," says Su Hainan, deputy director of the China Association for Labor Studies.

Su also suggested in addition to the average, some other auxiliary data should also be published so that people can get better acquainted with their income situation.
