Shanghai government plans to build a new bridge over Suzhou Creek in Jing'an District, it said yesterday on Weibo.

The notice did not say when the project would start. It said that the bridge will be called Changping Road Bridge and that it will be 800 meters long and about 45m wide.

It will be built from the intersection of Changping and Jiangning roads to the junction of Hengtong and Hengfeng roads, the post said, adding that it will be open to pedestrians and vehicles.

It will also be between the Changshou Road and Hengfeng Road bridges, and "will make it more convenient for local people to cross the creek to reach the commercial area along Nanjing Road W."

The bridge is also expected to "relieve the busy traffic on the existing bridges over the creek as well as the surrounding Xizang, Wuning and Hengfeng roads," it said.

There are about 30 bridges over Suzhou Creek.

The average gap between the seven that lie between the Changshou Road and Xizang Road bridges is 472m.

The authority said it is soliciting public opinion and evaluating the environmental impact of the project. It is also considering things like drainage and lighting.
