The works of two Chinese artists, Lin Weixiang and Hu Ke, are on exhibit for the first time at Art+ Shanghai Gallery.

The exhibit opened yesterday and runs through April 21.

Themed on "Rewriting Beyond Reality", Lin Weixiang's paintings shape dreamlike realms populated by motifs such as trees, lakes, and flowers, drawing inspiration from the landscapes of his home province of Guangdong.

Using acrylic on canvas, occasionally applied with a variety of different fabrics, Lin unfolds the multiple layers of an object against a plain background, blurring the boundary between creation and existence, imagination and reality, and bringing to mind the magical realism of authors such as Borges and Márquez. The world of Lin Weixiang is therefore a world filled with melancholy and nostalgia, mystery and truth, borrowing amply from the language of de Chirico's metaphysical art and with additional references to religion, mythol-ogy, and humanity.

A selection of sculptures from Chongq-ing-based Hu Ke is also on display. Hu's works emphasize the struggle of commu-nication between the individual, the self, and society. He has constructed figures atop trees and mountains, where feelings are unrestricted.

Date: Through April 21, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-7pm (Closed on Mondays)

Venue: Art+ Shanghai Gallery

Address: 191 South Suzhou Rd

南苏州路191号
