Workers in Shanghai keen to find better jobs

Workers in Shanghai were the second-most keen to find new employers after the Spring Festival, a popular time for job-hopping, while Beijing and Tianjin took first and third place, according to a report released yesterday by leading online recruitment portal Zhaopin.com.

People born after 1990 were the most eager to move into new roles, submitting 52 percent of the surveyed resumes.

Most of those surveyed said they would like to stay in the cities they were living in, and first-tier cities Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen were the most popular second choices, according to the report.

Of 7,253 resumes submitted between February 6 and 12 by jobseekers around China for posts on the website, 15.8 percent were from workers in the real estate industry, more than three times the number from people employed in manufacturing, the second-largest group.

As for specific positions, the largest group of job-hoppers was sales people, which made up 31.4 percent, followed by financial staff at 26.1 percent.

Real estate staff who had their eyes on the door preferred to continue working in the same industry, but workers in five other industries looked at real estate as one of their top three choices for future employment, said the report.

"The threshold to be a real estate agent is very low and many young people would like to have a try, especially since the housing market in Shanghai warmed up last year with an increase in selling price, and some agents were reported to earn more than one million yuan a year," said Liu Jun, a staff member at Lianjia, Shanghai's largest real estate brokerage.

Liu, who left an online real estate brokerage to work for Lianjia last year, said 60 to 70, or 10 percent, of the total employees at Lianjia's outlets in the Xinzhuang area of Minhang District had left this year and an equal number of replacements had been recruited.

Liu also pointed out that most housing agents are under 25 years old because older ones quit after they marry unless they have been promoted to management.

"Agents usually work more than 12 hours a day and almost have no family life," he said.

"People cannot afford so much time and energy in life after marriage."
