Local residents with Shanghai hukou can now apply for their identity cards at any of the 90 police stations in the city from January 4.
The new rules will come as a relief for citizens whose current home address is different from that in their hukou.
They previously had to make the trip to the police stations where their hukou was registered.
Some applicants, however, may still need to make the trip to their hukou addresses if there are issues with their verifications or they have "negative personal records," according to the new rule.
