Ten people were detained last month on suspicion of committing high-tech telecom swindles, police said yesterday in a press release.
A total of 12 base stations — electronic gadgets that allow people to send text messages to multiple recipients — were seized in the period, the release said.
In Jiading District alone last month, more than 70 telecom fraud cases involving 500,000 yuan ($77,000) were reported, it said.
Alleged victims claimed they were sent text messages purporting to be from their banks and telling them to go to a particular wesbite. The sites, however, had been set up to steal people's personal data, police said.
Since the start of the year, police have detained 49 people on suspicion of using base stations to commit telecom fraud and seized 33 pieces of kit, the release said.
