Shanghai's environmental authority has launched emergency measures against pollution on Monday morning after lingering smog is forecasted.

According to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the city would face a bout of pollution early this week due to pollutants brought in by the northwest wind, companied by a round of cold front. The density of the tiny polluting particles is expected to reach a peak on Tuesday evening.

Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau triggered an alarm at 9am on Monday. The emergency measures include suspend outdoor operation at all the city's construction sites within the Outer Ring region. No night construction is allowed, and muck trucks are banned from city roads. The bureau's law enforcement team would hold inspections around the city to supervise the implementation of the measures.

Shanghai's Air Quality Index has been rising since Sunday evening, and reached 162, or the moderately polluted level, at 8am on Monday. Tiny particle PM2.5 was the major pollutant. By Monday noon, the index detected in Qingpu District reached 202, or heavily polluted level, with density of PM2.5 surpassing 150 micrograms per cubic meter, six times of the WHO recommended safe standard of 25 micrograms in a 24-hour period of time.
